THE FORKS TRAIL REPORT 1/5/09

Lots of riders this weekend enjoying the trails. Overall feedback is very positive considering it's still early season, and we haven't had any new snow since the rain in late December. It's been cold so we have maintained our base, but we could use more snow soon as there are some thin spots and icy corners. Looks like a good storm coming through on Wednesday. Generally speaking trails on roads are good to excellent, and woods trails are poor to fair. All 70 miles of The Forks Trail System will be groomed on Monday, and again after the snow later in the week. Signage is up on all sections.

THE FORKS TRAIL REPORT 1/5/09

  • ITS 86 from Berry's Store heading east toward Greenville is generally in very good shape. Intown trails are rough, but things improve greatly just 1 mile out. The short Power Line section (1 mile) near Moxie Lake is very rough, but passable. All else is good cruising. Shirley Road and Brochu Roads are great.
  • Bald Mountain Trail  This is the former ITS 87 on the east side of Moxie Lake. Now connects ITS 86 and ITS 87. Excellent riding all the way.
  • ITS 87 heading south toward Bingham has mostly very good riding. There are three 1/2 mile sections on woods trails, that are very rough but passable. First is just south of the Northern Outdoors trail junction. Second is just south of Pleasant Pond. Third is a few miles past Pleasant Pond near Moores Bog. Other than that, it's pretty decent riding.
  • Pleasant Pond Club Trail  is not yet opened. Waiting for more snow.
  • Kennebec River Trail  is open and groomed all the way through from Northern Outdoors, to Berry's Store in West Forks. Fair shape with decent riding. Need more snow to touch up the rough spots.
Good riding to be had in The Forks area. Groomers need a little more snow to fix up the few problem areas out there. Remember, it's still early season and there are some minor hazards here and there, that need more snow. Corners can be icy too. Ride with caution at all times.

For all you day riders, there's a Free Park & Ride lot at Northern Outdoors on Route 201. Gas, trail maps, food, local info available right at the Lodge.
